“making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.” Ephesians 5:16
How did it come to this?
Growing up my parents used to play the Perry Como Christmas album. When I looked it up on Spotify to play a few songs and reminisce of the good ole days I stumbled upon a song called The Story of the First Christmas (1959 Version). It is a 10 minute song about the birth of Christ the Lord. Worth looking up. You would be hard pressed to hear that from the main stream music industry today.
The truth is that over the last 50+ years America has digressed morally. This digression is due to a gradual wandering from God. In reality, we are playing out something that has occurred since the beginning of time. It is called the rise and fall of civilizations.
The fall of a civilization is never purely economic, it is always rooted in moral decay.
In other words, as the morality of a nation erodes so does every other facet of society. The reason for this is because God created His Word to be the foundation of a functioning society. When His Word is removed, the structure collapses.
The collapse of America is inevitable so long as we do not repent and turn back to God.
When a nation first begins it is poor and agrarian. Then it becomes industrialized and that production is what makes it wealthy. After their industrial revolution wealth changes the nation from a production state to a consumption state. That means, they become an economy dependent on consuming rather than producing.
Decadence is fertile soil for depravity.
In this consumer based society wealth and self-centered focus is a deadly paradigm shift. In other words, in a society that tells you “it’s all about you” you end up transferring that line of thinking to your thoughts about God. You end up removing Him for your laws and daily lives.
Dr. Tony Evans addressed his church this Sunday with a heart felt sympathy for the victims of Newtown, CT said this:
“The further God is removed from the culture, the more evil is allowed to proliferate.”
When we reject God He ends up giving us what we want, He leaves us alone. But in reality it is God who protects us and His commands are there for our protection. When we reject Him we allow evil to prevail and we are left defenseless to enemy attack.
This starts within the Body of Christ and how we deal with sin internally. In fact, the Church of Laodecia mentioned in the book of Revelation was much similar to America today. Rich and spiritually luke warm. God tells them “I am about to spit you out of my mouth”. A passive approach to sin in our own lives ends up bleeding into the society to which we should be making an impact. We become spiritually irrelevant.
Someone who hasn’t repented can’t call others to repentance.
All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God (Rom 3:23). So I must repent daily and call others to repentance. The Gospel is a message of love and of people turning from their sins to follow God. A message that must be heralded by men and women with clean hearts and clean hands.
What is America producing? The actions of Adam Lanza were the actions of a sick mind. But is America producing more depraved and sick minds?
An episode of American Dad was pulled from the air because of the events in Newtown. The episode entitled “Minstrel Krampus” was going to be about “a demon who punishes naughty children” at Christmas. http://www.eonline.com/news/371886/family-guy-and-american-dad-episodes-pulled-in-wake-of-connecticut-school-massacre
I couldn’t help but think…
- We are fascinated with exorcisms and demons in movies and then wonder why they manifest themselves in our culture?
- Horror and murder are a staple on the big screen and on TV yet we wonder why our children’s minds are shaped to repeat what they have learned?
Our adult cartoons, pornography and other media show how sick and twisted our society has become. Out of a depraved mind these things were conceived and it will produce other depraved minds. Our minds need to be renewed (Romans 12:2) and our hearts need to be changed (Ezekiel 36:26).
Before you get to Jeremiah 29:11 you will read Jeremiah 17:9.
“The heart is more deceitful than all else
And is desperately sick;
Who can understand it?”
We are all sinners. We have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God (Rom 3:23) Mankind is fallen and we need a Savior.
Before Jesus was crucified Barabbas, a convicted murderer, was released. This was symbolic of thieves and murderers being set free because Jesus took the place for their sins. It was such an atrocity that Jesus was crucified in his place that it should resonate in your soul. The darkest of sinners has been forgiven by the blood of Jesus.
The shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary was unspeakable.
Thankfully God sent Jesus to save us. Not only to save us from the villain but to offer villains forgiveness as well. Those that repent and receive Christ as their Savior.
Don’t get me wrong, God is a God of justice. I read this in my quiet time this morning.
“The Lord is slow to anger and great in power, and the Lord will by no means leave the guilty unpunished.” Nahum 1:3
What else is there to say but, “Come Lord Jesus. Thank you for coming, and come again quickly.”
